    Why we love Ludlow

Considered to be part of Springfield’s metropolitan area, Ludlow sits directly to its northeast with a population of over 21,000. Ludlow is notable for its noticeably sizable Polish and Portuguese communities. Approximately 21 percent of the town’s population is Portuguese, making it a hotspot for Portuguese-American culture. An annual Festa is put on by the Portuguese church Our Lady of Fatima. This is one of the most significant Portuguese-American cultural events in the whole country.

Soccer has become very popular in Ludlow, due to its large Polish and Portuguese population. In fact, the high school soccer team from Ludlow is the most dominant team in Western Mass, ranking in the top 20 nationwide and having won a whole lot of state championships, most recently in 2018.

The town of Ludlow was settled in 1751 under the name of Stony Hill Parish. It incorporated as its own town in 1774, right before the start of the American Revolutionary War. Ludlow’s early streets were named after mostly farming families (Fuller Street, Alden Street, Miller Street, Chaplin Street, etc.) due to the town’s majorly agrarian function at the time. Ludlow made good use of the power of water in its early days, with many gristmills and sawmills functioning off the water from Broad Brook, Stony Brook, Higher Brook, and the Chicopee River. The town even started becoming a “mill town” right before the onset of the Civil War. Glass bottles were produced in Ludlow by big glasswire companies at the time.

The town most likely got its name from one of two sources, one of the founder of the Connecticut Colony, Robert Ludlow, or a town in England by the same name.
