    Why we love Agawam

Sitting on the western side of the Connecticut River, right across the river from Springfield, is the town Agawam. Its population is roughly around 29,000, and it is considered part of Springfield’s metropolitan area.

Agawam is known mostly due to it being the home of the Six Flags New England amusement park. A little interesting fact about Agawam: its ZIP code is the lowest number of all the continental states in the country; 01001.

The name of the town comes from the Native American village that used to inhabit the area: It was called many names, including Agawanus, Auguam, Igwam Aggawom, Onokwam, and Agawom, but Agawam is the one that stuck. These names were said to mean “fishcuring place” and “unloading place,” likely referring to the fish they unloaded from canoe fishing at Agawam Falls. The town of Ipswich was also called Agawam for a large part of the 17th century.

There are couple places you might want to visit on a trip to Agawam, most importantly Six Flags New England, the biggest amusement park in New England. There’s also the Agawam Historical and Fire House Museum, the Anne Sullivan Memorial, and the 110 mile Metacomet-Monadnock Trail through the Provin Mountain ridgeline in western Agawam.

Quite a few notable people have called Agawam their home, including Chicago bears Footbal player Roger LeClerc, Game of Thrones actor Tom Wlaschiha, voice of the Boston Red Sox Carl Beane, Helen Keller’s Tutor Anne Sullivan, Vietnam War military commander Creighton Abrams, Canadian hockey player Scott Daniels, Denver Broncos and LA Chargers player Phil McGeoghan, and Hockey Hall of Famers Earl Selbert and Eddie Shore.
